When dealing with credit repair companies, make sure you watch out for scams. The Better Business Bureau has an article that provides you with “red flags” you should be wary of when dealing with a credit repair clinic.
Here’s a summary of the BBB “red flags”:
1) The clinic does not inform you of your legal rights.
2) Recommend that you do not contact a credit reporting agency directly.
3) Ask for payment of services rendered before any services are in fact rendered.
4) Advise you to take illegal actions such replacing your social security number with a federal employer identification number.
Please note that there’s a big difference between not needing to do something and being advised against it. For example, if you hire a credit repair attorney then they may contact credit reporting agencies for you and save you some leg work. That’s not what the BBB is warning you about. What they’re warning you about is that some companies will tell you not to do certain things as a means of keeping information from you and not as a way of saving you hassle.
I’d like to add another “red flag” to this list. Any credit repair clinic that believes in size fits all. In 2003 there was a lawsuit against a credit repair clinic and what this clinic did was use software to “scrub” credit reports. If you’re working with a credit repair clinic that is not providing you with a personalized plan for repairing your credit, then you should be wary. Not all consumers will have the same types of problems with their credit.
The difference between credit repair clinics and credit repair lawyers is that legit lawyers know the law, advise you of your rights, advise you of the laws governing credit reporting, and can take some of the burden off your shoulders when it comes to disputing incorrect information.
Don’t get scammed. Contact a legitimate credit repair firm if you’re in need of services.
