What is a person’s credit score used for?
A credit score is a numerical score that summarizes your credit worthiness. Your credit score is based upon the information provided in your credit report.
When most people think about credit worthiness, they think about the ability to make large purchases such as a house, car, boat, etc. Poor credit can also be used to deny people apartments. Renters need good credit as much as people trying to buy a house.
However, what most people forget is that bad credit can limit employment opportunities. Banks require that their tellers have good credit. Some retail stores will check the credit of potential employees especially if the employee will be handling the store safe. Credit reports are also pulled when trying to get a government clearance. Many people in the tech field know that the best opportunities are connected with the defense industry and in order to work for a defense sub-contractor you must have good credit. Think about it…a bad debt to income ratio and poor credit is considered a national security threat. That’s a chilling thought.
This situation also becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. A person needs a good job to get out of debt and improve their credit score, but they also need a good credit score to land a good job.
There are honest people in the world who have just fallen on hard times. Just because someone owes money to a hospital or other creditor doesn’t mean they’ll sell out their country or steal from their employer too pay the bill.
What’s a person to do?
Credit repair attorneys may be able to help. If you know you’ll be applying for one of these positions, you owe it to yourself to clean up your credit. Today’s job market is tough enough. You need to do all you can to make sure you’re setting up yourself and your family for a positive and secure future.
