FTC’s “Project Credit Despair”

January 14th, 2008 · No Comments

In the realm of credit repair, scams are so prolific that in 2005 the FTC, Federal Trade Commission, started a special project they called “Project Credit Despair”. In 2006, the FTC shut down 20 credit repair scam artists at least one of those was based in Dallas, Texas.

These predatory companies bilked people out of thousands of dollars all on promises that they couldn’t legally keep. No one can legally remove legitimate negative entries on your credit report. It is positively illegal to try to replace a consumer’s social security number with an employer tax ID. It’s against the law to charge clients for credit repair services that have not yet been rendered.

Credit repair isn’t easy work. It takes careful planning and diligence in executing the plan. Credit repair attorneys stay up on current laws and practices around credit repair and personalize a plan for each client. Credit repair scam artists not only cheat clients, but make the work of legitimate credit repair lawyers all the more difficult.

Part of the problem is once a credit repair scammer gets shut down, another one is ready to take its place. Most consumers know how important good credit is and they’re desperate for help in repairing their credit. The scammers are getting pretty good at masking themselves and presenting themselves as legit. In the beginning scammers were fairly obvious to those in the know with their too good to be true promises. They’ve gotten smarter and consumers need to educate themselves and protect themselves from these wolves in expensive suits. Working with an illegitimate credit repair company does nothing, but cheat consumers out of money and waste time that could have been spent legally cleaning credit.

If you suspect you’ve been scammed by a credit repair clinic, seek legal representation. The FTC and the Texas Attorney General’s office take these scams very seriously. Depending upon your situation, there may be civil or criminal legal actions you can take to recoup some of your costs. Nothing can recover time.
