“Phishing” and Credit Repair

January 21st, 2008 · No Comments

As technology advances, identity thieves change their tactics. Yes, some of the older tactics such as watching you punch in sensitive information, rummaging through trash and even trying to trick you into divulging information are still going on, but advances in technology as well as our increased use of technology is opening up new ways of invading privacy.

When people think of computer hacking and identity theft, they may think of someone breaking through the security of a bank or store and the thieves getting the information that way. People may think that advances in technology may allow unscrupulous people to intercept phone calls especially ones made on cordless or mobile phones. Those types of things do happen, but there’s another tactic. That tactic is called “phishing”.

“Phishing” pronounced “fishing” as changed over the years. At one time it allowed nefarious people to make phone calls without paying for them. Now, “phishing” can be used to trick you into handing over bank account information, social security numbers, log in information and other types of sensitive information.

What happens is the “phishers” will set up a website that looks exactly like an innocent website such as your bank’s log in page. When you type in your username and password, it doesn’t go to the bank and goes to the “phishers” instead. They may set up these fake websites by using a typo in the URL or some other kind of link that will direct you to the fake page. The best way to protect yourself from this type of identity theft is to always check the URL of the webpage before you type in your information.

If you suspect that you’ve had your financial or personal information “phished” you need legal representation and credit repair services. The “phishers” can be prosecuted in a court of law and a credit repair attorney can set up a special plan of credit repair to minimize the damage done to your credit by the “phisher”.
